Opal Stuff
Opal has had some symptoms for years that I finally figured out might be reflux. (She coughs, she spits up clear liquid, she pukes occasionally, and lately she's been walking away from her plate mid-meal and not finishing.) This year she has been puking more than ever. I tried twice in 2017 to talk to my vet about it and each time he said he wanted to focus on the current issue now and worry about the reflux later.
I did some research on treatments for feline reflux. The first line, it turns out, is smaller, more-frequent meals. So about a week ago we transitioned the cats from 2-3 meals a day to 4 smaller meals a day. They used to each get 2.5-3 ounces at breakfast and dinner, plus another meal at lunch if they seemed really hungry. Now they get half of that serving at breakfast, another half at lunch, half again at dinner, and another half late in the evening (around midnight or 1).
So far it's working! Opal has not been coughing, or puking. She finishes her food and when it's time for more she lets us know. So I would say it has been a success. The only thing I don't like is that the cats are hungry more often and without regular schedules they just kind of get lunch and second dinner when we happen to be at home.
