Lights: I had some concerns that the Ushio lights were not powerful enough for the orchids. This mainly happened because 14 was growing a new leaf, but it didn't get as long as the previous leaf, before it started another. Also, I noticed that the leaves were looking dark, which can happen from too-low light. Yet, it was growing fat roots, a new leaf, and even new buds. I took it down last night and had a good close look at it and also took photos. I am certain now that the tint on the leaves is from high light! It is reddish, not dark green, and it's only on the places where the light hits the leaves. The new leaf is shorter because the old leaves were stretched due to low light conditions. So everything is as it should be. For the past month or so 14 has been on a pedestal to get it closer to the light, but I took it off the pedestal today because I really like the normal bright green color of the leaves without the red tint. You can see that color on this leaf- only the edge on the left side was exposed to the light, so only that little part has the red tint.I think there is a happy medium- it can get enough light to not stretch, without getting so much that it tints red.
