For about a decade now I have been using the Scoop-Free litter boxes. I don't like the disposable trays so when I moved in with B, we bought the "Forever Tray" which can be cleaned and re-used and they worked great. Then last year Opal began peeing next to the box. We tried a smaller-sized crystal litter and that appeased her for awhile but eventually it became clear that she doesn't like the crystal litter anymore. We bought a small, normal litter box and some clay litter to see if she would like that better and it turns out, BOTH cats like it better. The floor-peeing immediately stopped and both cats use boxes with clumping litter much more than any other box.
I hate scooping poop, and honestly none of the self-scooping clay litter boxes have great reviews, except for the Litter Robot, which costs $400. Although it isn't designed that way, some ppl say that you can use clumping litter with a Scoop-Free, so we decided to try that. It turns out that it does work ok, but the challenge is that because of clumps, the litter chamber fills up really really quickly and that starts to cause problems for the rake.
So now I just spent $150 on this thing called "The Litter Bagger", which should make the Scoop-Free boxes more usable. And then I immediately changed my mind and asked them to cancel the order because this is imo a ridiculous amount of money to spend on this. If we scoop out the waste compartment every few days we should be okay.
We do a lot for these cats!
