We need shelves in the living room. Our plan has been to build a bult-in shelving unit like this one, which is amazing and perfect. (although I would really like to know how it is attached to the wall, I am starting to suspect it's a death trap.) The thing is, we've been living here for more than a year now, and the lack of shelving is a serious cramp. I am unable to unpack a lot of stuff because we have nowhere to put it- I really need to get through all these boxes but it's hard to be motivated when I would just have to pack whatever I keep back up.
I am really, really not the kind of person who says "Let's buy something that works for now and then get the better shelving later." But at this point, I am leaning toward doing just that. It will annoy me, though: one of the reasons we wanted to do custom shelves was that our house is quite small and a shelf with 12"-14" depth is a waste of space for us. Books aren't that deep. And it's very difficult to purchase shelves that aren't that deep! Plus I really, really don't want anything that will make the room feel closed and smaller. And I hate buying anything "for now", but this may be a time when it's necessary.
