B and I went to the Cistern today to see an art installation there. It's called "Spatiochromal Interference" and involves many projectors projecting shifting patterns of colored, stripey light onto the pillars and water in the cistern, as well as onto some white cubes sitting on the cistern floor.

It was really beautiful, although I did get a little seasick about a quarter of the way into it; I paused and took some deep breaths and soldiered on. The art was breathtaking, it was so neat to just BE in the experience of art like that. I love art that creates a whole environment!

When B and I were nearing the exit the docent came up and chatted with us and told me that "your eyes don't start to perceive any color until you're about 100 feet in, and then you don't really see all the colors until you are halfway through," and went on to talk about brain perception of color and confusion and stuff.

I smiled and nodded but the truth is that I saw the stripes in color as soon as I got into the cistern. In fact during my seasick stop (before the 100-foot mark) B and I discussed the changing colors of the lights and etc. So was the docent talking about his own experience, or about something he read about how light and darkness confuse color senses in the mind? I wonder!

It's a really awesome space and I am glad that the city decided not to destroy it- although it would have been useful to dig that space out to catch stormwater, it's also really awesome to have the cistern for art. I wonder how they keep the water from getting stinky in there?

While there we saw a sign with lots of options for pontoon tours of the bayou and we have really been wanting to go on those- i think we're going to go on one every month all fall!
