I don't know if I mentioned already, but we are keeping Bundor the Bunbarian. Who, we have confirmed, is a boy.

Rabbits grow so fast! Like every time I feel like I have time to sit down and update, SO MUCH more has happened.

Bundor is a Lionhead mix, and he's starting to get his adult fur. When he was a baby, he was extremely fluffy all over, plus he had a little wispy mane on top of his head. Now his mane is expanding, he's growing some long mutton chops and the mane has started crawling down his chest, whereas the center of his face is a bit shorter. He has also started growing a "skirt" which is what they call the wool that grows long on a Lionhead's flanks. His skirt is hilarious right now, it's coming in in tufts, but they get bigger every day. I first noticed he was starting to molt about 3 weeks ago; it seemed that some of the hair on his lower flanks was suddenly shorter, making it look patchy. What was really happening was that the skirt tufts were just starting to grow out.

So right now he has a tuft of wool on his flank, kind of at the peak of his hip, and then a few tufts coming in at the britches. It looks hilarious and adorable! We groomed him for the first time tonight, giving him a gentle brushing with the hairbuster, and he handled it okay. If he ends up with a really long or full skirt we will probably have his britches trimmed by a groomer.

Fortunately for us, he really loves his pen and feels safe in there. He almost never rattles the gate wanting to come out. Every once in awhile he will rattle the gate at me when I am near, usually when I am picking up my room to prepare to let him out. But whenever Serena Pie is near, he goes nuts wanting to get out to gate to be near her! He rattles the gate and digs at the floor! He wants to be her friend SO BAD. Serena Pie likes him too, actually, but we are limiting their contact until her leg is totally healed; a few weeks ago he sniffed at her leg and she hissed, so I think she is scared he's going to hurt it. (Shortly after the surgery, Opal had the zoomies and she accidentaly kicked Serena's bad leg :( )She always sniffs his nose very closely, and then she turns around and waves her tail at him, which is a weird thing she does for attention.

Yesterday Serena Pie became fascinated with Bundor's hide (aka his hidey house.)  She kept stooping down to peer inside it. Then when we had the gate open and Bundor was out playing, Serena went in there and settle down in the hide! Bundor eventually hopped over and discovered her in the hide, which he was SO excited about! He approached her very sweetly, but she hissed at him and left. He went to sit in his litter box and eat hay, and she came back and went back into his hide!

Opal isn't as sure about him, but she's not afraid of him, which she was for the first month he was here. Both cats frequently choose to go into my room to hang out.

We bought some cable protectors for rabbit-proofing and will slowly be covering every cable. Bon covered most of the living room cables tonight. Last week, for the first time, Bundor chewed a cable. He made a small hole in the cable to my e-file. Fortunately he didn't chew all the way through it or get electrocuted, and B easily repaired it, but it made bunny-proofing more urgent.

Bundor's litter training has improved. A month or so ago I tried scatter feeding and he would just poop wherever he was eating. So I had to feed him everything in the litter box. About 3 weeks ago I bought a food-dispensing ball for him to eat his kibble out of, but he couldn't figure out how to use it. Last weekend I tried it again and he not only got it, but he loves it! We give him the ball with pellets in the evening and he has a blast rolling it all over and eating kibble. That was encouraging, so I tried scatter feeding his veggies last night and it went very well. So all his veggies will be scatter-fed from now on, it's enriching for him. I always put some veggies on top of his hide for him to find.

Bundor is getting older and will need to switch to 100% grass hay soon. I saw a variety pack of Oxbow hay on sale at Petsmart so we bought it, and I have been mixing some of these hays into his alfalfa, one at a time. Although he willingly ate timothy hay when we first found him, today he MUCH prefers the alfalfa hay. He will eat all the alfalfa hay before eating the grass hay. He also prefers the softer parts of the alfalfa to the stalky bits, but he clearly prefers the stalky alfalfa to the grass hays. In the near future, though, he is going to be out of alfalfa hay and I won't be buying more.

Bundor's favorite toys:
straw mats: he demolishes one of these in about 2 weeks. He chews and digs at it.
cat ball with a rattle in it: he can't get a grip on the smooth surface so he pushes it all over the floor and goes crazy.
a paper towel tube with one end cut into long strips (B's invention): he likes to toss this one around and chew on it. Waving it in front of him gets him excited and aggro.
TP tube with applewood sticks stuck through holes in it, my invention: I think he likes this one because it has different surfaces and it's assymetrical in both shape and weight. He likes to pick it up and drop it as well as chew on it.

Bundor is so loving. Sometimes I worried that when I was petting him he was just frozen in fear or something, but it has become clear that he really likes us. The other night he came to me and I was petting him on the head, and he laid himself flat down on the floor in relaxation. And today B was holding Bundor and petting him while I cleaned up his pen, and Bundor was licking B's chest!
