I am exhausted, the weather is cold and wet. Fortunately B has noticed that when the weather is like this, I want pasta, so he brought home a variety of pasta dishes for dinner!
F, the contractor, quit on Monday morning. He was working in the back yard and I poked my head out and saw him prying up a tree root with a pickaxe. I asked him to be careful, he said okay, no big deal. The tree was fine. A little while later I stepped outside and he said "I think we're finished. We've took out all the dirt we can and we leveled it."
Point 1: no, he hadn't leveled shit.
Point 2: he had not removed soil from a really critical place: the enclosed area on the S side of the house. That area is where the water came into the house, because the piled up soil there trapped it against the house. He also hadn't done the North side of the house.
I pointed out that the N side and that the south area needed to be done. He said "We can't do anymore there, there's concrete." I said "oh, really? I didn't know there was any concrete there."
Then he said "There's tree roots," referring to the redbud tree on that side of the house. I said "That tree has to come out at some point anyway, so I don't care what happens to its roots, we need that soil gone to keep water out of the house."
This enraged him. He said "This is the last thing we're gonna do." I misunderstood and said "Oh, you're not going to do (the south area)?" and he said that he was going to do that but no more, because "You always have a problem with everything I do. You're just looking for problems. You come out here like I am killing your trees."
Y'all, I was so sick of this guy and at this point IDGAF if he quit. He has not finished a single job we hired him to do. Ever since he started work he has tried to find a way to NOT do the shit he agreed to do when we hired him. And his attitude toward me was misogynist AF. So I calmly said "It's obvious that you will have a problem with anything I say, but not with anything B says," and you know what he said? He said "Exactly!" He fucking admitted it! I laughed and said "Okay," and went into the house to tell B what was up. He agreed with me that F has piled up too many red flags and we are not interested in trying to talk him into continuing.
I personally do not think that this guy even did enough work to justify the entire deposit, but I also know he's not going to give us anything back, so it's not worth trying to get any money back from him. I am relieved to not be dealing with him anymore.
He didn't finish the work inside the house that he agreed to do, and he hasn't leveled the yard or built the fence. But the house is mostly put back together. The walls are closed up and the closet is usable. I did some cleaning in the bedroom but it was making me feel super-ragey, so B finished up the bedroom on the weekend and we've been moving things back. We both did some cleaning in the third room. Progress! Less stress!
This weekend WE will level the yard and Al, at least, will be able to go back outside. I am hoping we can build Rex's pen next weekend and he can then go back outside. We can't agree on how large to make it/where to plot it, but we can work on that this week. I personally would love to fence in the bulk of the yard for him but that is probably not going to happen right now.
