There's a long story for another entry. But this one is just to record that our North fence is back up and for the first time since Harvey I can open my living room blinds and still have privacy.

What's interesting is that I still felt really hesitant and vulnerable when I opened the blinds a few minutes ago. It's been so long since we've had a fence! Even though I knew rationally that the fence was there, I still felt vulnerable. I will get used to the new reality :)

We also have a graded yard now so this week I get to plant things! yay!
I am exhausted, the weather is cold and wet. Fortunately B has noticed that when the weather is like this, I want pasta, so he brought home a variety of pasta dishes for dinner!

F, the contractor, quit on Monday morning. He was working in the back yard and I poked my head out and saw him prying up a tree root with a pickaxe. I asked him to be careful, he said okay, no big deal. The tree was fine. A little while later I stepped outside and he said "I think we're finished. We've took out all the dirt we can and we leveled it."

Point 1: no, he hadn't leveled shit.

Point 2: he had not removed soil from a really critical place: the enclosed area on the S side of the house. That area is where the water came into the house, because the piled up soil there trapped it against the house. He also hadn't done the North side of the house.

We had a confrontation with the contractor today. We asked him to make some adjustments to the textures on the walls and he refused. He first tried to blame me for the texture not matching, and then accused me of looking for things to dislike, with the implication being that I wanted to get out of paying him (which is ridic.) He said that he didn't want to spend any more time on our house and suggested that maybe he should just quit and give us some money back for the unfinished work. I asked how much we would be getting back, and then he changed his tune and said "Not much. I already did more than I said I would do. I spent money out of my own pocket on texture for the walls," which of course doesn't make any sense, because that "money out of my pocket" was in his pocket because we paid it to him. I pointed out that so far, we've paid him $1625 and neither the drywall and paint ($800) or the yard regrading ($900) are done. He said that I don't want him to finish, and I assured him that I like the work he has been doing and I do want him to finish. He was really pulling out the stops to manipulate us, he even said "I even fixed the columns!" like that was some kind of favor to us.

Ok the contractor has gone all sorts of shady and we may end up firing him today.

Yesterday he called in sick. That was fine, people get sick! He was sick one day last week too, and we understand that and don't want him working sick. This morning, he called B early in the morning and said he was too sick to come in, but was sending his employee in to do the drywall mudding. That guy came in and started work, and almost as soon as B left, F shows up. He always waits until B is not home to have these pushy conversations with me, and I suspect this morning it was intentional, because . . .

He informs me he is not going to paint the master bedroom. He says that painting was not included in the original estimate and that I said I would paint. I showed him his estimate where he wrote that painting was included. I acknowledged that I said I would purchase the paint, but that he was hired to do the painting. He changes his tune and says that he only meant painting the places where he drywalled. I point out that he is drywalling in the bedroom. He insisted that we never mentioned painting the whole bedroom. I know that we did, because B forgot to bring it up and so I did, and he was all "Oh yeah, I forgot about that. We want this whole room painted white." So now F says he's not going to paint my bedroom. He says it will take too much time and that he thought I was going to paint.

So I think I wrote a few months ago that we had hired a guy to regrade the yard and he quit and took more than a month to return our deposit. Well, now we have hired someone else and this guy is going to do the yard, the fence, AND the drywall repairs. Supposedly he is going to start the yard on Tuesday. Please let this happen and go smoothly. I need it. I need to be able to open the blinds and let the sunshine in, yet still have privacy in my home. I need my yard to not be a pit of mud and mess. I need to be able to USE my patio and enjoy the garden. I need my walls to not be open. I need INSULATION in the south wall of my house. Etc. I need to put Harvey behind me and that means my house needs to be whole again.

Sunday we picked up and moved a lot of stuff in the yard to prepare. Today I drained the pond down to a few inches of water.

It was warm Sunday so I also took all the chids (except the Solstice newbs) outside to treat them for rhizoctonia. I am not sure if I should treat them again- the first treatment was with 3-in-1, which has a smaller amount of fungicide, and the last two treatments have been with Disease Control, which is a higher concentration of the same fungicide, and says not to use more than 3 applications. I guess I will see how things go for the next two weeks.

The landscaper we want to hire to regrade the yard has been squirrelly. Like he's really slow to respond to contacts. When I get him on the phone he asks me to send him an email, and then when I send the email he never responds. So Monday I texted him saying I sent an email to let him know we want to hire him. He responded Tuesday morning. Supposedly he will get back to me soon.
